Modern Farmhouse Styling Tips by The DIY Decorator

I often get asked about the style of my home. Honestly, it’s a question I haven’t always been able to answer, even after almost 20 years as a qualified interior decorator. My home is filled with items that I love and that hold meaning for my family. It’s a mix of old and new pieces that create warmth and interest, making the space inviting and practical.
In recent years, I’ve noticed a growing love for the modern farmhouse interior style, which has become a popular trend in America. This style has also found its way into Australian homes, including mine. The modern farmhouse look combines different materials, textures, colours, and shapes. Unlike many other styles, the more eclectic the collection of items, the better!
I finally figured out that my interior style is modern farmhouse. So, I started the hunt for modern farmhouse pieces. Did I find things I love in Australia? Absolutely! However, I struggled to find affordable options to replace my current furniture. But I found a solution for those of us who love farmhouse-style furniture but need to stick to a budget.
Over the years, I’ve collaborated with Luxo Living on two furniture ranges and helped with product selections. It made sense to team up again to create an affordable farmhouse range. For the past year, we have been working on a collection of pieces that I adore and know others will love, too! This range includes concrete, timber, and fabric pieces that fit beautifully with the farmhouse style and many contemporary interiors.
When curating this collection, I focused on showcasing beautiful, warm timber tones. I included curves and textures that add interest to a space, paired with lovely boucle fabrics to soften the harder finishes. The result is a harmonious blend that captures the essence of modern farmhouse style.
Modern farmhouse is the ultimate cosy interior style—it’s warm and welcoming without being cluttered like some traditional country styles. This style mixes tradition with a modern twist, reflecting contemporary living. Timber, metal, stone, and fabric elements bring life to your home, telling a story about you while sparking conversation among visitors.
When designing the Luxo Living x The DIY Decorator Farmhouse Range, I aimed for pieces that you would instantly love. Items featuring small but meaningful design details catch your eye and make you say, “Ooh!” With ball details, arches, curves, warm and black-stained timbers, and beautiful textured concrete, I feel this range embodies everything I love about interior design.
This collection shows that you don’t have to match everything. Your interior style should reflect a collection of what you love. Each piece from the range is named after someone special in my life, and I hope these pieces will be cherished and seen as meaningful additions to fellow interior lovers' homes.
Tips for Incorporating Modern Farmhouse Design into Your Home
- Mix Old and New: The charm of modern farmhouse style lies in its mix of vintage and modern pieces. A rustic coffee table, like the Cam Indoor/Outdoor Concrete Coffee Table pairs beautifully with contemporary accent chairs.
- Embrace Natural Materials: Use materials like wood, stone, and metal for a warm atmosphere. Pair the Em or Leigh Solid Oak Dining Chairs with a reclaimed wood dining table, with stone accents for added character to your dining room.
- Focus on Textures: Layering different textures against clean lines adds depth to your home. Use soft fabrics like linen and boucle with harder materials like the Hollie Indoor/Outdoor Concrete Side Table, to create a balanced look in your living room.
- Choose a Neutral Colour Scheme: While you can use colour, a neutral palette is key to modern farmhouse style. Think whites, creams, and soft greys, accented by earthy tones to evoke a calm backdrop.
- Create Cosy Spaces: Use textiles like throws, cushions, and rugs to make inviting rooms. A well-placed rug can anchor a room and create intimacy in the interior space.
- Enhance with Contrast: Add contrast to your farmhouse interior with the Rissa Black Concrete Side Table. Its sleek, rounded legs pair well with soft fabrics like linen, while the dark concrete complements natural materials such as wood and stone, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
- Select Statement Pieces: Look for standout items, like a beautiful light fixture or a striking piece of art, to serve as feature item in your space.
- Keep It Functional: The modern farmhouse aesthetic is practical. Choose furniture that is stylish and functional, to ensure your space is liveable and beautiful.
By following these tips, you can create a modern farmhouse-inspired home that is uniquely yours. Remember, the key to this style is to fill your modern farmhouse home with items that resonate with you and reflect your personality.
I hope you find inspiration in the Luxo Living x The DIY Decorator Farmhouse Range, and I can’t wait to see how you incorporate modern farmhouse style into your own home!
